Paul Stamets is an American mycologist, author, accomplished martial arts athlete, holding a black belt in Taekwondo and also in Hwa Rang Do. He is also advocate of bioremediation and medicinal mushrooms. Stamets runs Fungi Perfecti, a family-owned company that sells mushroom cultivation kits and supplies.
Paul Stamets has made cardboard packaging that can be planted and will grow into trees. The Tree Life Box is made of recycled paper fiber. In this fiber, we have inserted a wide variety of tree seeds, up to a hundred, dusted with mycorrhizal fungal spores. The mycorrhizal fungi protect and nurture the young seedlings. For millions of years, plants and beneficial fungi have joined together in a mutually beneficial symbiotic relationship.
He is also author of the book called Mycelium Running: How Mushrooms Can Help Save The World (2005). The book explores the use and applications of fungi in bioremediation (mycoremediation). Stamets details methods of termite and ant control using nontoxic mushroom mycelia and elaborates on fungi that may be able to neutralize anthrax, nerve gas and smallpox.
